8,000 steps and 30 minutes: the simple formula behind Performance.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Performance is 60% steps (goal 8,000) and 40% training (goal 30 minutes).
  • Large studies show the benefit of steps rises quickly and then levels off.
  • Consistency beats intensity: most days matter more than one hero workout.

Fitness tracking can get complicated fast: zones, loads, readiness, strain. Underneath all of it sit two simple habits that matter most for most people: moving through the day and training on purpose. That is exactly what the Performance score in The Disciplinest measures.

01How the score works

Performance is 60% steps and 40% training. Steps count towards a goal of 8,000 a day. Training counts towards 30 minutes, and every kind of purposeful exercise counts: running, strength, cycling, swimming, HIIT, yoga or a brisk walk. Hit both and you score 100.

“The boring formula wins: move every day, train most days, repeat.”The Disciplinest

02Why 8,000 steps

A large analysis of 15 international studies, published in The Lancet Public Health in 2022, linked more daily steps to a lower risk of death. The benefit rose quickly at first and then levelled off: for adults over 60 at roughly 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day, and for younger adults at roughly 8,000 to 10,000. So 8,000 is not a magic number, but it is a realistic daily goal right where most of the benefit is.

03Why 30 minutes of training

The World Health Organization advises adults to do at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a week, plus muscle-strengthening activity on two or more days. Thirty minutes on most days gets you there without overthinking it.

04Consistency over intensity

One brutal session followed by four quiet days scores worse than five ordinary ones. That is on purpose. The Disciplinest rewards the habit, because the habit is what changes your health over months and years.
